Sophomore forward Courtney Pomeroy (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake
Shore) picked a great time for her first two goals of the season on
Wednesday afternoon in a 2-0 win over Hope to begin the MIAA
portion of the schedule.
The Bulldogs improved to 7-1-2 overall and pitched their fifth
shutout of the season in the victory. Adrian has now posted a
nine-game unbeaten streak.
Freshman forward Sam Barker (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) assisted
on both Pomeroy's goals showing her unselfish nature. Pomeroy's
first goal was set up perfectly by Barker. She dribbled into the
box and fired a shot which was saved and the ball bounced right
back to her. Barker then skipped a pass over to
Pomeroy who had a good look and buried it from nine yards out at
15:46.
The Bulldogs carried their slim lead into the second half and
put pressure on the Flying Dutch right away. Senior midfielder
Tessa Kellar (Novi, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) found a streaking
Barker who carried the ball downfield before faking a shot and
passing it to a wide open Pomeroy who easily scored from six
yards out at 55:28.
Hope's best chance to score in the second half came at 67:02 as
Raisa Yewah headed the ball wide left from just
outside the box which would have cut the lead in half. Kelsey
Bos made 10 saves for Hope (3-6-1, 0-1 MIAA) as Adrian outshot the
visitors, 16-11, including a 12-5 edge in shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chayna Wallace (Bedford, Mich./Bedford)
made five saves in earning the shutout. She is now 6-1-2 in net
with a 0.57 goals against average. Barker now has 30 points this
season which is one point shy of the single-season school record
shared by Amy Buchanan (1990) and Lori Hodges (1992).
