Karsten's Blast Gives Adrian a 3-2 Win over Alma

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. - The best match of the season came down to the final seconds and freshman forward Ellery Karsten scored her biggest goal of her rookie campaign with 26 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 win over visiting Alma College. The Scots were down a player after Ann Kennedy got her second yellow card of the match with roughly four minutes to go. Adrian used the advantage and Karsten got a pass from Erin Weide and blasted her fourth goal of the season to the top left corner from about 21 yards. Adrian improves to 10-3 overall and 8-1 in the MIAA. Alma falls to 10-2-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference. Adrian now has a pair of 3-2 wins over the Scots and have put themselves in the driver's seat for their first MIAA title in program history.

The game was a see-saw affair which saw Alma take a 1-0 lead just 3:21 into the match. Elaine Cunningham scored her fifth goal of the season with an assist from Annette Stromberg on a through ball shot from 10 yards. The Bulldogs answered with two goals in the first half to take a 2-1 lead at halftime. Katie Caruso got Adrian on the board with a fortunate goal at 11:35 for her first of the season from Courtney Pomeroy. Caruso lobbed the ball from about 30 yards straight over the head of goalkeeper Monica Witt. Witt actually punched the ball into the net.

Sam Barker netted her 14th goal of the season at 25:45 on a beautiful individual effort. She took the ball one-on-one to the right wing past a defender and shot the ball lower left corner from around 18 yards to give Adrian a 2-1 lead.

Stromberg tied the match at 2-2 with her fourth goal of the season at 53:43 with an assist from Samantha Waldrop. The Adrian defense seemed to hesitate on the play and Stromberg got behind the defense and dribbled to around 15 yards and shot the ball lower right corner off the hand of goalkeeper Chayna Wallace.

Alma had a 15-11 edge in total shots as both teams recorded seven shots on net. Wallace made five saves and Witt corraled four saves. Each team was whistled for 11 fouls.
