Box Score 2 ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College softball team improved their perfect record as they swept cross-town rivals Siena Heights 8-4 and 3-1. The Bulldogs, now ranked #17 in the most recent NFCA poll, improved their record to 14-0 on the season.
In the first game, starting pitcher sophomore Jami Shafley (Freeland, Mich./Midland) pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning but again found herself stuck in a bases loaded situation with no outs in the second inning. A double by Brittney Rhodes cleared the bases as the Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Junior Kelly Eberhardt (Wellington, Ohio/Black River) came on in relief as the first batter reached on an Adrian error allowing a run to score. That would be the only run Eberhardt would allow to score as she shutdown Siena Heights over the last five innings to finish with six strikeouts on just two hits.
The Bulldogs rallied back in the top of the third, as the first four batters got on base and all came around to score. Adrian would bat around in the inning, scoring five runs on five hits. Adrian added a run in the fourth after senior Katie Adams (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) tripled to led off the inning. Sophomore Amara Karapas (Saline, Mich./Saline) led off the next inning, hitting her fourth home run of the season. The Bulldogs finished the game with 14 hits, the second most this season as a team.
Adams finished the first game a perfect 5-for-5 with two runs scored. Freshman Brittany Bertrand (Grand Blanc, Mich./Goodrich) was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Maggie Hein (Adrian, Mich./Lenawee Christian) and Sarah Hall (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon), both juniors, went 2-for-4 at the plate with Hall driving in two runs.
Eberhardt had another solid outing to earn the victory in game two, as she shutdown the Saints allowing one run on five hits while striking out three over seven innings.
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as the Bulldogs hitters were unable get anyone in scoring position. Finally in the fourth inning, Hall reached base on a walk and after base hits by junior Laura Heinz (Manchester, Mich./Clinton) and Karapas, Hall scored the Bulldogs first run. Adrian would load the bases in the inning but were unable to add to the board.
In the top of the seventh, a single by freshman Katie Dewyre (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) and two Saints errors, allowed the Bulldogs to score two in the inning to pull out the win.
Karapas led Adrian going 2-for-4 with an RBI while Hall scored two of the Bulldogs runs.
With the sweep of the Saints, Adrian has tied the school record for most consecutive victories to start a season and consecutive wins in a season of 14, which was set in 1991.
Adrian will look to remain perfect as they host Franklin College for a doubleheader starting at 1:30 pm on March 19.
