Box Score 2 ADRIAN, Mich. – Two key home runs lifted the Adrian College softball team to a sweep of Ohio Wesleyan University by scores of 2-1 and 5-2. With the wins, the Bulldogs improve to 27-1 on the season.
Neither team was able to get much offense going early on in game one as both teams managed just two hits apiece through four innings. The Battling Bishops had an opportunity in the third as they had runners on first and second with only one out. Sophomore pitcher Jami Shafley (Freeland, Mich./Midland) got the next two Ohio Wesleyan batters to groundout and end the threat.
In the bottom of the fifth, senior Kristin Toney (Cassopolis, Mich./Edwardsburg) led off the inning with a single to left. Junior Katrina Wotten (Blackstock, Ont./Cartwright) then sacrificed Toney to second. Toney would advance to third on a wild pitch and then score on a passed ball to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.
The Battling Bishops came back in the third to tie the game at 1-1. After a one out single, the Wesleyan player came all the way around from first to score on an Adrian error. Shafley then got the next two batters to go down swinging to end the rally.
In the bottom of the sixth, with two outs, freshman Jennifer Wend (Riverview, Mich./Riverview) came to the plate. Wend took the 1-2 offering over the left field fence for what would be the game-winning run. The Battling Bishops tried to come back in the top of the seventh, but junior Kelly Eberhardt came on to close out the game and earn her fourth save of the season.
Shafley earned her seventh win of the year as she finished game one with six strikeouts over six innings allowing just one unearned run on three hits and two walks.
Just like the previous night, the Bulldogs started the first inning of the second game scoring three runs to jump out to an early lead. Senior Katie Adams (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) led off the inning reaching base on a Ohio Wesleyan error. Adams then stole second and scored on a single by freshman Katie Dewyre (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) who then advanced to second on an error by the Wesleyan catcher. Junior Sarah Hall (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) came to the plate and with a 1-2 count, launched the pitchers offering over the left-center field fence and off the side of the hitting facility for her sixth home run of the season.
The Battling Bishops scrapped across a run in the second after a one out single and a two out double to left scoring the runner.
Adrian tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, pinch hitter junior Laura Heinz (Manchester, Mich./Clinton) reached base on a Battling Bishops error. Consecutive hits by Wotten and junior Maggie Hein (Adrian, Mich./Lenawee Christian) loaded the bases for Adrian. Back-to-back walks to Adams and Dewyre scored two Adrian runs.
Freshman Sarah Muncey (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) came on in the seventh to close out the game for the Bulldogs. After getting the first two Wesleyan batters out, Muncey gave up a triple and a single to score a run for the Battling Bishops before getting a ground out to end the game.
Eberhardt finished the day earning the win in game two and the save in game one after pitching a total of seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out seven Wesleyan batters and walking only one. Muncey finished the afternoon allowing one run on two hits.
Dewyre led the Bulldogs on the day going 3-for-6 at the plate with two RBI's and a run scored. Toney also had three hits on the day as she was 3-for-5 with a run. Wotten was the only other Bulldogs player with multiple hits as she was 2-for-5 with a run score.
The Bulldogs will go right back to work as they travel to take on MIAA opponent 21st ranked Alma College on April 11 at 3:30 pm.
