Box Score 1 ADRIAN, Mich. – It was an all-around solid day for the 13th ranked Adrian College softball team as they swept MIAA foe Olivet College 12-4 and 10-2. The Bulldogs improve their record to 30-2 on the season and 8-2 in the conference.
In game one, senior Katie Adams (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) led off with a walk and was followed by singles by freshman Katie Dewyre (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) and junior Sarah Hall (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon). With the bases loaded, sophomore Jennifer Wend (Riverview, Mich./Riverview) stepped up and delivered with a single up the middle to score Adams. Senior Kristin Toney (Cassopolis, Mich./Edwardsburg) stepped in next and also delivered a single to center to score Dewyre and then freshman Brittany Bertrand (Grand Blanc, Mich./Goodrich) followed with another single to plate Hall. With only one out in the inning, Comets pitcher Katie Harper got sophomore Katrina Wotten (Blackstock, Ont./Cartwright) to ground into a double play and end the Bulldogs threat.
The Bulldogs stepped on the gas in the second inning as they scored five runs on seven hits as they batted around in the inning. The inning was capped off with a two-out two RBI single by Bertrand.
Olivet's only runs of the opener came in the fourth inning. A two-out double to right-center plated the Comets first run. Olivet pulled within 8-4 after a three run home run by Brooke Coshow.
Adrian answered back in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff single by Adams, Wend came up with two outs and she delivered for the Bulldogs. With a 2-0 count, Wend belted the Comets offering over the right field fence for her second home run of the season.
Adrian tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on hits by Wotten and Adams to enforce the eight-run mercy rule.
Sophomore Jami Shafley (Freeland, Mich./Midland) finished the game pitching a complete game going five innings allowing four earned runs on three hits while striking out seven Comets and walking two.
Playing as the visitors, the Bulldogs started game two off with a bang. After a leadoff single by Adams, Dewyre sacrificed her to second. Hall stepped up, and on the first pitch, drove the offering over the right field fence for her seventh round tripper of the season.
The Bulldogs tacked on a run in the second with a leadoff single by junior Laura Heinz (Manchester, Mich./Clinton) and a throwing error by the Comets allowing pinch runner freshman Ravin Toner (Romulus, Mich./New Boston Huron) to advance to third. Toner would then score on an RBI single by Adams.
Hall led off the third inning with a single, advanced to second on walk to Wend and was sacrifice by Toney to third. Hall would then score on a sacrifice fly by Bertrand on a long foul fly ball.
In the top of the fourth, sophomore Amara Karapas (Saline, Mich./Saline) led off the inning and with a 1-0 count launched the pitch deep over the center field wall and off the roof of the Bulldogs hitting facility. Adrian would add three more runs, all coming with two outs on five consecutive hits by the Bulldogs, including doubles by Hall and Toney.
In the top of the fifth, Karapas again stepped up for Adrian, this time with one out. On the first pitch, Karapas again launched the ball over the fence, this time to right-center, for her team-leading eighth home run of the season. Adrian would score another run in the inning as pinch hitter sophomore Tara Camper (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Park) singled to right field and came around to score after a single by Adams and a Comets wild pitch.
Olivet was able to score twice in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff single followed by a two-out double and an Adrian error.
Junior Kelly Eberhardt (Wellington, Ohio/Black River) earned her 19th win of the season after pitching four innings in game two allowing zero runs on just one hit with six strikeouts and two walks. Eberhardt's no-hitter was broken-up in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out single by Coshow. Sophomore Jessie Plague (Sterling Heights, Mich./Adlai E. Stevenson) came on to pitch the final inning allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.
On the day, nine different Adrian players had multiple hits. Hall led the Bulldogs going 4-for-6 on the day with a home run, four runs and three RBI's. Adams also went 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBI's. Dewyre was 3-for-6 on the afternoon with two runs scored and an RBI. Bertrand was 3-for-5 at the dish with a team-high five RBI's. Toney was also 3-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored. Wotten went 2-for-4 on the day with a run and an RBI. Karapas was a perfect 2-for-2 with her two solo home runs. Heinz also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-5.
The two home runs by Karapas in game two was the second time in her career that she has gone deep twice in a game, the other coming last season at home on March 26 against Albion College. Adrian scored in every inning of each game, it was only the third and fourth time this season that it has happened, and the first time the Bulldogs have done so in both games of a doubleheader. With the swept, the Bulldogs have taken seven of the last eight games against the Comets under head coach Kristina Schweikert.
Adrian will host MIAA opponent Albion College for a doubleheader on April 16 starting at 1:00 pm
