Box Score 2 ADRIAN, Mich. – Seven of the Adrian College softball starters had multiple hits in their doubleheader sweep of MIAA opponent Albion College 15-4 and 9-4. The 13th ranked Bulldogs improved their record to 32-2 on the season and 10-2 in the MIAA.
Adrian came out fast in game one as they scored seven runs in the first inning as the Bulldogs batted around the lineup. Adrian had four hits in the inning on two Britons errors.
Albion scored a run in the second after back-to-back singles and a bases loaded walk. The Britons tacked on two more in the third on two hits and two Bulldogs errors.
After the Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the second and couldn't get a run across, Adrian rebounded in the third as they plated eight runs on five hits.
The Britons committed two errors to start the inning as freshman Katie Dewyre (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) walked to load the bases for junior Sarah Hall (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon). Hall would single to right field as everyone advanced a base and fellow junior Maggie Hein (Adrian, Mich./Lenawee Christian) scored. Freshman Jennifer Wend (Riverview, Mich./Riverview) then walked on four straight pitches as senior Katie Adams (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) came across the plate.
Albion made a pitching change, but that didn't matter to senior Kristin Toney (Cassopolis, Mich./Edwardsburg). Toney took a 2-1 offering a drove it deep over the center fielders head as she cleared the bases with her fifth triple of the season. Toney would then score on a groundout by sophomore Amara Karapas (Saline, Mich./Saline).
With two outs in the inning, three consecutive singles by junior Katrina Wotten (Blackstock, Ont./Cartwright), Hein and Adams drove in another Bulldogs run. Adrian rounded out the inning, as Adams got caught in a run-down on a steal attempt, Hein raced home to beat the throw at the plate and Adams successfully reached second.
In the top of the fourth, the Britons led off the inning with two consecutive singles. With no outs, Dewyre made the play of the game as she made a running catch in right field and doubled off the Albion runner at second. Albion would score a run later in the inning but the Adrian lead would be too much to overcome.
Sophomore Jami Shafley (Freeland, Mich./Midland) earned the victory in game one as she pitched a complete game allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out two and walking five.
Game two didn't quite start the same way as the first for the Bulldogs as they were shutout the first three innings as they scattered just two hits.
The Britons scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third after a Bulldogs error and a sacrifice bunt followed by a sacrifice fly.
Adrian countered in the fourth as freshman Brittany Bertrand (Grand Blanc, Mich./Goodrich) doubled to right field with one out and Wotten followed with a single to right. Hein followed suit with a bloop single to center that looked like the Britons center fielder would catch but fell just in front. Originally, Bertrand held at second, but as the Albion player bobbled the ball, Bertrand came across to score.
Adrian blew the game open in the fifth inning as they put seven runs on the board on five hits and three Albion errors.
Dewyre led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Wend followed with a single up the middle as Dewyre would score. Pinch hitter junior Laura Heinz (Manchester, Mich./Clinton) doubled to left center to put runners on second and third. Karapas then hit a sacrifice fly to left field as Wend would score.
With two outs, the Bulldogs put their foot on the gas. Pinch hitter freshman Ravin Toner (Romulus, Mich./New Boston Huron) reached on an error as Toney, who came back in to run for Heinz, scored on the play. Hein hit a groundball to the first baseman, and sped down the line beating the throw to the second baseman covered the bag. With the bases now loaded, Adams walked on four straight pitches to score Bertrand.
Albion brought in a new pitcher to try and stop the Bulldogs, but Dewyre slapped a grounder to the third baseman who was unable to come up with the grounder, scoring Toner. Hall stepped in, and on the first pitch, delivered a shallow single to center scoring Hein and Adams all the way from second. Wend came to the plate and again on the first pitch, launched a line drive right at the Albion third baseman who was unable to hang on to the ball to load the bases again. The rally would end there as the Albion pitcher got the next batter to go down swinging.
After striking out the first two Albion batters in the bottom of the fifth, junior Kelly Eberhardt (Wellington, Ohio/Black River) gave up back-to-back singles and a double, as Albion plated two runs.
The Britons would tack on another run in the sixth on a home run by Tate Kern to right center.
Adrian added their own run in the top of the seventh after Dewyre reached on a Britons error. After Hall walked, both advanced on a groundout by Wend. Toney then singled to second to score Wend.
Eberhardt got the Britons out in order in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bulldogs the win.
Eberhardt pitched a complete game in game two giving up four runs (three earned) striking out 11 Britons while allowing just five hits and two walks.
Toney led the Bulldogs on the day going 4-for-8 at the plate with four RBI's and two runs. Wend also had four hits on the day going 4-for-8 with three runs and three RBI's. Wotten was 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Hall went 3-for-6 at the dish with three RBI's and two runs scored. Hein went 3-for-5 on the afternoon with three runs and two RBI's. Bertrand was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Dewyre went 2-for-7 with a game-high four runs scored. Adams had three runs and three RBI's.
With Adams scoring three times on the afternoon, she set the single season record for runs scored with 42. Adams shared the previous mark of 40, which she set last season, with former player Krissy Sheets who did it in 2009. With the series sweep, Adrian has now swept Albion the past five seasons, dating back to 2007. Albion had previously swept the three previous seasons from 2004-2006.
Adrian will wrap up their home regular season as they host MIAA opponent Trine University on April 21 at 3:30 pm for Senior Day.
