Bulldogs and Hornets Battle to 2-2 Draw

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. - It looked like a golden opportunity to earn three points in the league standings for the women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon. Kalamazoo had other ideas however as they kept their hopes of making the MIAA Tournament alive with a 2-2 draw against the Bulldogs at Performance Stadium on an overcast cool day.

Adrian (9-2-3, 6-2-3) led twice in the contest only to see the Hornets match it. Sophomore Erin Weide scored her 11th goal of the season at 8:57 after a Kalamazoo defender gave up the ball and Weide converted the turnover in front of the goal. In the second half, Kalamazoo tied it at 1-1 at the 51:10 mark as Emily Gray delivered a strike over the head of Adrian keeper Chayna Wallace.

Adrian regained a 2-1 lead at the 74:24 mark on a fantastic strike from junior Abby Doebel. She received the ball from 25 yards out on the right wing and aimed for the top left corner connecting on her second goal of the season. It took just 2:19 for the Hornets to answer however as Alex Groffsky played a ball off a corner kick with an assist from C.J. McCarthy. The shot lobbed over the head of Wallace into the top right corner for Groffsky's second goal of the season.

The Hornets (7-5-2, 5-4-2) held a 16-8 edge in shots on net as Wallace made several nice saves for the Bulldogs. Wallace finished with a season-high 14 saves including five in both overtime sessions. Lucy Mailing made six saves for the Hornets.

"Today was not a very good representation of the way that we're capable of playing, but I think at least some of that is the result of fatigue," said head coach Ali Alamdari. "Three games in five days is never easy, and the quality of the opponents was high in each one. It seems odd to say that an undefeated week is a disappointment, but that's the reality of the high expectations that we have for this team. We'll look forward to using the bye next week to recover and hopefully get a few players back from injury."
