Box Score OLIVET, Mich. – The women's soccer team posted its ninth shutout of the season and have now not allowed a goal in four straight matches with a 2-0 victory Saturday evening at Olivet College. The team climbed to second in the MIAA standings with 31 points (9-2-4) and have won 12 times in 2012. The win sets up a showdown on Halloween afternoon at Performance Stadium (Wednesday) against Calvin College with the chance of sharing the MIAA regular season championship. Calvin sits atop the standings with 34 points.
"I want to give a lot of credit to all of our attacking players. I challenged them at the beginning of the week to take their focus and intensity to a higher level, and they have each responded very well. The games don't get any easier from here on out, but we're thrilled to be playing for another MIAA Championship on Wednesday," commented head coach Ali Alamdari.
Sophomore Erin Weide made a stronger case for possible MIAA Player of the Year honors with her 17th goal of the season at the 77:15 mark with an assist from Lauren Cozzi. The Bulldogs salted away the win as Courtney Pomeroy scored her fifth goal of the season unassisted off a rebound at the 84:12 mark.
"We knew we were in for a tough match today with it being Olivet's senior night and last game of the season. They played extremely well and had us scrambling for most of the first half. To our credit, the girls came out with a very high level of focus in the second half and we felt that if we sustained pressure long enough we would eventually put the ball in the net. Fortunately, we were able to get a second goal to calm things down a bit for the last few minutes," said Alamdari.
Senior Chayna Wallace stopped all three shots she faced in the shutout. Adrian had 13 shots on goal led by Weide's six.
