Men's Tennis shows steady improvement even in 7-2 loss

ADRIAN, Mich. – Usually winning two matches isn't headline news, unless you've never done it before and it's against a 74-year reigning dynasty.

The men's tennis team (8-8) won once at doubles and once at singles against Kalamazoo College on Sunday afternoon. The Hornets have either won or shared the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association crown the last 74 years going back to 1936. They have won it outright 72 times.

Adrian rallied in doubles play to pull within a point going into singles play. Spencer Georgetti and Ryan Delacy picked up the win at No. 3 doubles with a 9-8 (7-4) win.

The Bulldogs came within a whisker of heading into doubles play with the lead as the No. 1 doubles team of Jordan Verbauwhede and Michael Mertz fell just short with an 8-6 loss.

Overall, Adrian played competitively at doubles being outscored by just five points over the three matches.

The first match completed in singles play was by Troy Gargrave at No. 6 singles. He was the lone victor for either team on the afternoon not to lose a game in singles play by winning by identical 6-0 straight-set wins.

Gargrave's convincing win tied the match at 2 apiece.

Only Verbauwhede ended up taking a set at No. 1 singles, although Alex Amos dropped a tough first-set in No. 4 singles, 7-5.

The rest of the men's singles matches resulted in six combined wins for Mertz, Delacy, and Alex Holdren at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5, respectively.

Next up for the men's team is a road match against Calvin on April 17th at 4 p.m.
