Bulldogs Claim 6-3 Road Win over Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. – This season has already been a historic one for the men's tennis team and on Sunday they added another chapter with a 6-3 win at Trine University. The Bulldogs have won seven of their last eight matches and in the process improved to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA.

"I think that our team has really bought into things that turn around a dormant program," said head coach Adam Albertsen. "Our team deserves a lot of credit for putting in hard work and to see us become successful is very rewarding. Our doubles has been strong all season and the early advantage gives you a lot of confidence once you have a lead going into singles."

The Bulldogs indeed picked up three points by sweeping doubles against the Thunder. Michael Mertz and Spencer Georgetti finished first with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Alex Amos and Ryan Delacy also won at No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 score over Nick Ihrie and Joey Clark. The toughest matchup at No. 1 doubles belonged to Jordan Verbauwhede and Joey Loselle by an 8-6 score over Caleb Knust and Joe Dunbar.

Trine made things a little more interesting by taking three singles matches including the first two to cut the lead to 3-2. Knust and Nick Cassidy each won at No. 1 and No. 4 singles in straight sets. Mertz got the fourth point of the match at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Clark. Mertz improved to 13-3 in singles play this season. Amos clinched the team's win at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Tyler Davis. Loselle was the last finisher for the Bulldogs and claimed a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over Dunbar. Loselle tied a single season singles record at 14-2 which he shares with Chris Ludwig and Mertz.

The Bulldogs return to the courts when they host Calvin on Wednesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. at Craft Tennis Complex.
