Softball Finishes Play in Clermont, Fla. with Split versus Ferrum and Immaculata

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Adrian College softball team finished their play in Clermont, Florida Wednesday with games against Ferrum College and Immaculata University. Adrian started the first three days with a 6-0 record as they headed into their final two games in the Sunshine State. Ferrum jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a home run in the fourth that left the Bulldogs behind. Ferrum handed the Bulldogs their first loss of 2015 on a 6-2 final as the Adrian headed into its final game in Clermont. The Bulldogs then took on Immaculata University and Kaitlin Lock led the Bulldogs from the circle with a seven-strikeout performance in five innings pitched as Adrian advanced to 7-1 overall with a 5-3 win.

Game one saw the Bulldogs take on Ferrum College. The Panthers took a 3-0 lead after the fourth inning when they hit a three-run home run with two outs. Ferrum then added two runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-0. The Bulldogs would respond in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to cut the Panther lead to 5-2. Morgan Brandt singled to deep right center to score Brooke Stewart and Kaitlyn Hinojosa took home on a double steal to keep the Bulldogs in the game. Ferrum would add to their lead in the sixth with another run, and keep Adrian scoreless through their final two at-bats as the Bulldogs dropped to 6-1 overall on a 6-2 final score.

Stewart (1-1) made the start in the circle and took the decision with five innings pitched and five strikeouts. Kaitlin Lock pitched two innings and recorded one strikeout.

Adrian then responded in game two with a 5-3 win over Immaculata to bring their overall record to 7-1. The Bulldogs took the 1-0 lead in their first at-bat as Karissa DeVore doubled to center field to score Brandt. Adrian would then extend its lead in the third to 4-0 with a three-run inning. Brandt hit a hard shot to second base that scored Jessica Sarch and DeVore followed with a single up the middle that drove in Brandt and Hinojosa. Immaculata battled to stay in the game with two runs in the third and one run in the fifth, but the Bulldogs remained in charge with their fifth run on a Hinojosa RBI single that scored Kim D'Arcangelo.

Lock (2-0) earned the victory in the circle for Adrian with five innings pitched and seven strikeouts. Payge Reed recored one scoreless inning pitched with two strikeouts and Kelsey Meyer earned the save on one scoreless inning pitched.
