GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The early season positioning match in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association went to the home team on Tuesday with a 5-4 win by Calvin over Adrian. The Knights improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA while the Bulldogs are now 15-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
The Bulldogs were 8-0 on the road this season entering play and were looking to stay atop the standings. Calvin and Adrian battled in doubles as all three matches were 9-7 scores. Michael Mertz and Joey Loselle improved to 13-2 as a tandem this season at one doubles over Matt VanWinkle and Taylor Asfour. Jeff Sophiea and Troy Gargrave lost at two doubles to Matt Buesing and Tom Griffin. Gene Hill and Jared Doezema also won for the Knights at three doubles against Alex Amos and Brandon Brom.
Five of the six singles were completed in straight sets with Adrian winning three of those matches. Loselle improved to 17-2 in singles this season with a 6-2, 6-1 win at two singles over VanWinkle. Mertz improved his team-leading singles record to 18-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the three spot over Griffin. Sophiea went 6-4, 6-4 at four singles over Asfour and is now 16-1 in singles this season. Amos came the closest to potentially swinging the match in favor of Adrian at six singles. He won 6-1 in the first set before Anthony Vroon rallied to win the match 6-2, 6-3.
