WHEATON, Ill.- The Adrian College men's wrestling team traveled to the Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational on Friday for two days of competition. The Bulldogs would finish 17th out of 32 as a team with 35.5 points. But the story of the day was Adrian's nationally-fifth-ranked freshman Angus Arthur, who would win the 197 weight-class bracket.
Arthur, who was seeded #1 in his weight-class, started strong after his first-round bye, pinning his opponent at the 4:17 mark to win his first match on Friday. He would follow up by pulling out a 7-6 decision against #8 seeded Elizabethtown College's Luke Fernandez to advance to the second day of composition. On Saturday, Arthur would once again start strong by pinning his first opponent of the day, #5 seeded Zach Tooley of No. 5-ranked University of Wisconsin–Lacrosse, at the 2:39 mark to advance to the championship bout. Arthur came out on top in an 11-6 decision to complete the tournament over #3 seeded Mike Swider of host Wheaton College. The 4-0 finish raises Arthur's overall record to 23-0.
Also having a strong performance for the Bulldogs was fellow freshman Connor McDill in the 157 weight-class. McDill followed up a second-round loss, by winning three matches in a row. The streak culminated in an impressive 18-4 major decision over #8 seeded Clayton Davidson of Ohio Northern University to advance to the second day of the tournament. McDill couldn't sustain the streak, however, falling on Saturday, but he still finished eighth in his weight-class.
The roster for the Bulldogs at the tournament was as follows:
Brandon Harris (125)
Joe Dombrowski (133)
Austin Eldred (145)
Cody Smock (149)
Connor McDill (157)
James Pace (165)
John Cooper (174)
James Davis (184)
Angus Arthur (197)
Zac Rieger (285)
The Bulldogs next compete when they travel to Olivet College on Thursday, February 4, at 7:00 p.m. for a dual meet against the 25th ranked Comets.
