OLIVET, Mich.--The Adrian College men's wrestling team traveled to nationally-ranked Olivet College to face off in a team dual. The No. 25 Comets (14-10) pulled away in the middle matches to hand the Bulldogs (7-3) a loss by the score of 29-15 at the Cutler Event Center on Thursday.
The first three weight classes went to Olivet giving the hosts a 13-0 lead. But the Bulldogs wouldn't go down easily, though, as freshman Codey Smock came away with a tough victory over Matt Lopez 8-5 in the 149 weight class. The win gave the Bulldogs three points.
At the 157 weight class, Connor McDill would continue the comeback attempt by pinning his opponent at the 2 minute and 38 seconds. Adrian closed within 13-9.
But that would be as close as the Bulldogs would climb as the next two matches would be won by technical falls for Olivet, making the score 23-9.
At the 184 weight class, James Davis would come away with a 6-4 win over Olivet's Rodney Harvey. The win made the score 23-12 in favor of the Comets.
Despite the lopsided score the most exciting match of the evening was at the 197 weight class, where #5-ranked Angus Arthur faced off with Olivet's Thomas Hall. Arthur came away with a takedown in the first period, but Hall would escape to make the score 2-1. Hall would build on his escape momentum with a two-point near fall, giving him the 3-2 lead over Arthur. But Arthur was able to get the escape to tie the match. Arthur would choose to start on top in the third and would keep on top of Hall for the entire third period giving him the advantage in riding time and a crucial final point for the 4-3 victory. With the win, the freshman remains undefeated with a 24-0 record.
Adrian returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Mid-States Conference Tournament hosted by Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. That event serves as a tune-up for the Feb. 27 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at Wabash College in Crawfordville, Ind.
