CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa--Adrian College freshman Angus Arthur dominated on the first day of the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships hosted by Cornell College at the U.S. Cellular Center. Arthur pinned two opponents to reach the 197-pound national semifinals on Saturday.
In his first career NCAA bout, Arthur--the fourth seed in the tournament--earned a fall over Kyle Koser of Messiah College in 4 minutes and 57 seconds. Then in the quarterfinals, he dispatched fifth-seeded Matt Seabold from Central College (Iowa) in shorter time--2:42.
Next up, Arthur will square off against No. 1 David Welch out of nationally-ranked Roger Williams University. They will battle for the right to compete in the championship finals on Saturday at 11 a.m. Eastern to begin Session III. The event wraps up with Session IV at 8 p.m. Eastern later in the day.
Welch defeated unseeded Mason Baumgartner from Concordia-Wis. by a 5-0 decision in the first round and then pinned Hunter College's Dennis Melendez with 37 seconds left in the third period of their quarterfinal match-up.
In the team standings, Adrian is tied for 16th out of 58 schools with 12 points.
