ADRIAN, Mich.--Host Adrian College doubled up Calvin College, 6-3, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's tennis action on Saturday at the Craft Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs extended their winning streak to a season-best five matches to improve to 14-6 overall and 5-0 in the MIAA. The Knights, meanwhile, drop to 8-4 on the season and 2-2 in the MIAA.
Adrian took a 2-1 lead after capturing two of three doubles matches. No. 1 junior Joey Loselle and senior Michael Mertz defeated Matt VanWinkle/Taylor Asfour, 8-3. Sophomores Brandon Brom/Mitchel Bulger downed Jason Wolters/Andrew Airgood at No. 3. The Knights got on the scoreboard with a No. 2 triumph for Matt Buesing/David Brown against Jon Rhind/Jeff Sophiea, 8-4.
The Bulldogs took a 4-1 advantage in singles as Mertz beat VanWinkle at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-2, and Loselle won over Buesing, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1.
Tony Vroom won at No. 6 singles to bring Calvin within 4-2, but the Bulldogs clinched the match on Brom's No. 3 singles victory over Brown, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
Bulger also was a double-winner for Adrian at No. 5 singles in three sets.
Asfour picked up Calvin's other point at No. 4 singles against Sophiea. They split the first two sets and were tied 4-4 in the third before Asfour won by default.
Adrian will host NAIA-scholarship opponent Bethel-Ind. on Tuesday in a make-up match from earlier this month.
