HOLLAND, Mich.--The Adrian College men's tennis team moved to 2-0 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with their fourth consecutive win over Alma College, 6-3, on Friday in a match played at neutral-site Hope College.
Against the Alma Scots, the Bulldogs (9-6 overall) were led by junior Joey Loselle and Michael Mertz who won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, and they teamed up for a No. 1 doubles win over Jared Guy/Bryan Schutte, 8-5. Loselle and Mertz defeated Guy and Schutte, respectively, by identical 6-1 and 6-2 scores.
Working with a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition, Adrian also got victories in singles from No. 3 sophomores Brandon Brom over Luke Van Fleet, 6-4, 6-3, and Jeff Sophiea over Noah Ackerman 6-3, 6-2. The Bulldogs took four of six singles matches.
Alma picked up two points in singles by Grant Hill at No. 4 and Damien Arthur at No. 6.
Adrian's other point came via doubles, as Brom and classmate Mitchel Bulger edged Van Fleet/Arthur at No. 2, 9-8 (7-3 in the tiebreaker).
At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Jon Rhind and Sophiea dropped a tough 8-5 decision to Ackerman/Hill.
Adrian wrapped up the day with an 8-1 non-conference defeat at the hands of Wabash College (13-10 overall) in the MIAA-North Coast Athletic Conference Challenge at Hope.
Mertz won again to pick up the Bulldogs' lone point versus the Little Giants. He defeated William Reifeis at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
Adrian is scheduled to play on Saturday at Albion (11 a.m.) and host Huntington (4 p.m.).
