ALBION, Mich.--Visiting Adrian College won key points in several singles matches to earn a 7-0 shutout over Albion College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's tennis match on Saturday, taking over sole possession of first place in the MIAA over an idle Calvin squad (7-2, 2-0) by a half-game.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 10-6 overall and 3-0 in the conference; the Britons, meanwhile, drop to 2-11 on the season and 0-2 in the MIAA.
Junior Joey Loselle helped lead the way for Adrian with singles and doubles victories in the top spot. First, he partnered with senior Michael Mertz for an 8-4 win over Ross Kynast and Zach McKenzie in doubles that gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the time. Then in singles, Loselle edged Kynast 7-6, including 7-3 in the first-set tiebreaker, and 6-2.
Mertz also prevailed in his No. 2 singles match in straight sets over Peter Pappas, 6-4, 6-2.
The Bulldogs claimed thrilling singles matches at Nos. 3 and 4. First, sophomore Mitchel Bulger clipped McKenzie at No. 4 in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Then in the other position, classmate Brandon Brom edged Josh McGarry by taking the second set 6-1 and a super-set tiebreaker 11-9 after dropping the opening frame 7-6 (7-3).
Two matches went unfinished at Nos. 5 and 6 singles.
Adrian also took home doubles wins at No. 2 by Brom/Bulger, 8-5, and No. 3 by sophomores Jeff Sophiea/Jon Rhind, 8-3.
Adrian was also scheduled to host Huntington-Ind. later in the afternoon, but the coaches of both teams made a late decision to postpone the match.
The Bulldogs resume action on Monday versus non-conference opponent Bethel-Ind. at home, beginning at 4 p.m.
