Zach Rieger of @AC_Bulldogs Captures 285-Pound Championship at NWCA Open

FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Junior co-captain Zach Rieger went undefeated in four matches to claim the 285-pound championship to highlight the Adrian College men's wrestling team's appearance at the 2017 National Wrestling Coaches Association Open tournament on Thursday held here at War Memorial Coliseum. There were no team scores.

Rieger began his morning with a 5-minute, 25-second pin of Ethan Hofacker from Augsburg, which is the No. 3 ranked team in NCAA Division III. Rieger earned a 10-2 major decision over Indiana Tech's Edward Valdez and then a 5-3 decision versus DJ McIntyre out of Concordia University to reach the NWCA 285-Finals. Rieger won the title in his weight class in thrilling fashion by edging Logan Bowman, 1-0, who competes for NCAA Division II scholarship Wheeling Jesuit, which is nationally ranked No. 20.

Rieger was not the only Bulldog who found success on the mat today as fellow co-captain Dominic Paterra, a sophomore, went 2-2 at 133 on the afternoon. Paterra won his first two matches to reach the championship quarterfinals, where he fell in an 8-2 decision.

Sophomore Ty Jasman was second to Rieger's four wins as he posted a 3-2 record at 149. After a 14-1 loss in his opening bout, Jasman reeled off three consecutive victories by scores of 14-6, 10-4 and 15-0 in reaching the fourth round of the consolation flight.

Adrian returns to action on Friday, Dec. 13, when the Bulldogs will host Division I Eastern Michigan at the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center.
