ADRIAN, Mich.--Adrian College senior co-captain Zach Rieger captured the 285-pound championship in overtime to cap a successful day of the first-ever Adrian Bulldogs Men's Wrestling Invitational on Saturday at the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center field house. Approximately 1,000 people attended the event which featured action on six mats simultaneously.
Wabash, which is ranked 21st in NCAA Division III, led the nine-team field with 200 points, followed by No. 25 Heidelberg (115.5), John Carroll (113.0), Mott Community College (96.5), Washington & Jefferson (82.5), Adrian (70), NCAA Division II Lourdes (70), Henry Ford Junior College (44) and Thiel (29.0).
Rieger started the season 3-0 with victories over Max Bishop of nationally-ranked Wabash, 7-2 decision, Heidelberg's Christian Climer via a technical fall in 6 minutes, 21 seconds, and nipped Wade Ripple from Wabash with a 5-3 sudden-victory. Rieger is ranked No. 9 by D3wrestle.com and No. 10 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
Bulldog teammates freshman Malachi Greene and junior co-captain Dominic Paterra finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively, at 133. Greene went 3-2 on the day and Paterra won two bouts as the former beat the latter in the seventh-place match.
At 157, Adrian sophomore Dylan Steward is receiving votes for national rankings in D3wrestle.com. He opened the 2017-18 season with a 4-2 record. One of his highlights was a 7-minute pin over Joshua Armstrong out of W&J. Steward reached the third-place match after a thrilling 12-10 win over Thiel's Jason Miller in the consolation semifinals.
Freshman Bryant Moore reached the fifth-place match at 165 before leaving with an injury. Moore won his first collegiate match in an AC singlet with a 58-second pin against Jasper Gallardo from Lourdes University.
Junior Clarence Kennedy recorded three of Adrian's six pins on the afternoon on the way to an eighth-place showing at 197. After losing to HFC's Robert Jewell in the opening bout in a 34-second fall, Kennedy stormed back in the wrestlebacks to eventually meet again with Jewell for seventh place but Jewell won by a 70-second pinfall.
Adrian returns to the mat next Saturday at the Trine University Invitational in Angola, Ind., starting at 10 a.m.
