FORT WAYNE, Ind.—The Adrian College men's wrestling team concluded the first day of action Friday at the 2017 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships hosted here at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum by Manchester University.
Junior co-captain Zach Rieger provided the top highlight for the Bulldogs with a pair of pins to advance to the semifinals of the 285-pound class. He began his day with a win over Alma's Robert Rankin in 1 minute and 28 seconds and dispatched Sam Hipple—noted as a contender for the title by D3wrestle.com--from nationally-ranked Wabash in the same amount of time.
Rieger will square off against Jesse Judge from nationally-ranked Olivet at 10 a.m. Saturday. The winner advances to the championship bout while the loser will go to the consolation flight with a chance to still qualify for Nationals.
Freshman Dylan Steward, who wrestles at 157, also won a match in the championship round, as he won by technical fall, 21-6 at the 7:00 mark, over Nick Miller (Trine University). However, he was unable to continue that momentum in the quarterfinals and he was eliminated in his first consolation flight bout.
As a team, Adrian is tied with Ohio Northern and Trine for 11th place (14-1/2 points) out of 16 schools.
