ADRIAN, Mich.--Seniors Jon Rhind and Jeff Sophiea were two of five Bulldogs who won two matches on Friday, as Adrian College defeated Albion College, 8-1, in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener for both squads at the Craft Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs grabbed a quick 3-0 lead after the doubles round. Rhind teamed up with freshman Ronald Ducharme at No. 1 to edge Nick Kinachtchouk/Josh McGarry 9-8 (6). Sophiea and sophomore Nathan Waterbury crushed No. 2 Robert Joerg/Israel Trevino, 8-0, and sophomores Kyle Haines/Tanner Wilcox (Adrian) defeated Patrick Barclay/Chandler Martin at No. 3, 8-2.
Competing in singles, Sophiea, Wilcox, Haines, Waterbury and Rhind also were victorious--all in straight sets.
Josh McGarry put Albion on the scoreboard with a No. 1 singles win over Ducharme 6-3, 6-2. Waterbury did not give up a game to his opponent at No. 5 singles or No. 2 doubles.
The Bulldogs have posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season to improve to 4-6 overall, while the Britons drop to 4-9.
Adrian continues its three-match homestand on Wednesday against conference foe Alma College, beginning at 4 p.m.
