Women's Tennis Opens MIAA Play with Heartbreaking Loss to Trine in Spring Home Debut

ADRIAN, Mich.--Senior Renae Almasy won both of her matches at No. 1, but it wasn't enough as the Adrian College women's tennis squad lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to Trine University during its spring home debut in the Bulldogs' Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener on Monday at the Craft Tennis Complex.

Trine led 2-1 after the doubles round as Almasy paired with sophomore Samantha Cyrus at No. 1 to double up Madison Hatkevich/Zoe Laubach, 8-4. Almasy's No. 1 singles win over Hatkevich in a three-set thriller, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, made it 4-3 in favor of Trine at the time.

Adrian tried to mount the comeback but the Thunder's team win hinged on the racquet of Katie Simon who defeated sophomore Makayla Jorgensen in a three-set No. 6 singles match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Bulldogs senior Amber Laginess defeated Laubach at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 10-6, to round out the scoring in the last match of the day.

Kinnsey Pass, Kyra Braun and Simon paced Trine with two wins apiece.

Trine improves to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-9 and 0-1 in the conference.
