Men's Tennis Falls at Calvin in MIAA Regular-Season Finale, 7-2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--The Adrian College men's tennis team wrapped up the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association schedule on Friday with a 7-2 loss at Calvin College. The host Knights up their overall record to 16-3 and 6-1 in the MIAA, while the Bulldogs slip to 8-9 on the season and 4-3 in the conference.

Senior Jeff Sophiea led the way for Adrian with a pair of victories, teaming up with sophomore Nathan Waterbury at No. 2 doubles to beat Rodrigo C.V. Guzman / David Brown, 8-5, and then coming from behind in his No. 2 singles match to topple Jose Larrea, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The Bulldogs lost a couple of heartbreakers in singles in three-sets that made the final result much closer than it appeared. At No. 3, sophomore Tanner Wilcox fell 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 to Matt VanWinkle and Waterbury was edged by David Brown at No. 4 by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 score.

Jason Wolters and VanWinkle paced Calvin with two wins apiece.

Adrian is scheduled to close out the regular season next week in a pair of home matches versus Ohio Northern (Wednesday, 4 p.m.) and Grace College out of Indiana (next Saturday, 1 p.m.).
