ADRIAN, Mich.--Seniors Jeff Sophiea and Jon Rhind made it their mission on Wednesday to get a win for the Adrian College men's tennis team on what else, Senior Day. Led by that duo, the Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season with a 6-3 non-conference victory over visiting Ohio Northern University at the Craft Tennis Complex.
Adrian finishes the home slate 4-3 and improves to 9-9 overall, while Ohio Northern drops to 13-8 on the season.
Sophiea was a double winner at No. 2 doubles with sophomore Nathan Waterbury who defeated Tim Kargl/Cody Hurley, 8-3, and then clinched the Bulldogs' victory at No. 2 singles over Hoang Do 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Rhind was victorious at No. 6 singles against Tyler Frantz, 6-0, 6-2.
Sophomores Tanner Wilcox and Waterbury also picked up two points for Adrian. Wilcox teamed up with classmate Kyle Haines at No.3 doubles to trip up Connor Christian/Tyler Frantz, 8-6. He also downed Connor Christian in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, at No. 3 singles. In addition to his doubles triumph with Sophiea, Waterbury breezed by Tim Karglm 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.
Vinh Thai led the Polar Bears with wins at Nos. 1 doubles and singles.
Adrian looks to continue its season on Tuesday in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament Semifinals at Hope College in Holland.
