Women's Soccer Soars Past Comets to Open Conference Play

Box Score

OLIVET, Mich. – The Adrian College women's soccer team opened Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play on Wednesday, Sep. 26 with a 2-1 win on the road at Olivet.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Adrian 2, Olivet 1

Location: Olivet, Mich. (Olivet College Soccer Field)

Records: Adrian 4-4-1 (1-0 MIAA), Olivet 4-3-2 (0-1 MIAA)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Adrian got on the board first when junior Caroline Fleming gathered a loose ball in the box and snuck a shot into the near corner to beat the keeper in the 19th minute.

The score remained 1-0 through the rest of the half, but Olivet answered and tied the game three minutes after the break. The next 25 minutes would go scoreless, until sophomore Mya Oleksiak headed a ball in to break the tie in the 72nd minute. Oleksiak received a cross in the box from Fleming and used her head to direct it past the keeper for the game's deciding goal.

TOP DOGS

• Oleksiak and Fleming both netted goals for the Bulldogs. It was Oleksiak's second of the year and Fleming's third, bringing her tied for the team lead.

• Fleming and freshman Sabrina Weir led Adrian with four shots apiece.

• Junior goalkeeper Ayverie Giller made seven saves in the win.

THE OPPOSITION

• Emma Essen scored the goal for the Comets, with Abby Radcliffe notching an assist.

• Goalkeeper Samantha Gifford made two stops on the day.

QUOTABLE

"We're thrilled with the intensity that we brought to this matchup. We attacked from the opening whistle, and maybe were a bit unfortunate to have not built a bigger lead by halftime." – Head Coach Ali Alamdari

"Credit to Olivet, they made some adjustments and put us on our heels to draw level, but Ayverie came up with a big penalty save that helped turn momentum back around, and Caroline and Mya combined on a quality goal to seal it up late." – Alamdari

"Nothing can replicate a conference battle, we'll take the three ponts any way we can get them and get ready for Alma on Saturday." – Alamdari

UP NEXT

The Bulldogs return to Docking Stadium this Saturday, Sep. 29th when they host Alma in MIAA play. The Black and Gold defeated the Scots on the road in non-conference action 1-0 earlier in the year.
