CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.--Sophomore Devon Pingel is headed to the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships next month after a terrific debut at the Central Regional here at Wabash College's Knowling Fieldhouse, where he finished as the runner-up in the 184-pound division on Saturday. Adrian scored 40-1/2 points to finish 13th in the 19-school team standings.

Pingel went 1-1 on the day to go 3-1 in his first regional as a Bulldog after transferring from NCAA Division I Cleveland State at the end of his 2017-18 freshman campaign. He lost to nationally-ranked Dylan Roth (No. 5 by the National Wrestling Coaches' Association) of Heidelberg in the title bout via pin 3 minutes and 35 seconds in. The score was only 2-1 in Roth's favor at the end of the first period before he got Pingel on his back early in the second.

But Pingel got to the championship match with a 10-4 decision over Thomas More's Avery Jones to start his day. On Friday, Pingel defeated Cash Thompson of Ohio Northern by decision, 4-0, and Dylan Seaton of Alma by a 14-6 major decision. Pingel improves to 28-6 on the season and is listed as a contender as the 11th-ranked wrestler in the latest D3wrestle.com individual rankings.

Freshman Collin Lewis also saw action on the second day of the event at 285 pounds. He went 4-2 on the weekend to place fifth in the region. Today, he sandwiched a pair of victories via fall around a 12-5 consolation semifinals loss at the hands of Olivet's Trevor Piggott, who is ranked among the top-30 heavyweights in the nation. Lewis pinned Christian Climer (Heidelberg) in 3:25 and Antonio Zapata (Muskingum) in just 45 seconds.

The host Little Giants won the Central Region team title with 156-1/2 points, followed by Baldwin Wallace (146-1/2) and Mount Union (144). Those three teams appear in the latest NWCA national rankings at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7, respectively.

Pingel will be the third Bulldog in the modern era of the program (since 2015-16) to represent Adrian at the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be March 8-9 in Roanoke, Va., this year. More information about the national championships to be announced at a later date.
