ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's tennis team won its conference opener on Friday, March 29, defeating Trine University 7-2. The Bulldogs took the top doubles flight before winning each singles match, with only one going to a third set.
The junior tandem of Tanner Wilcox and Nathan Waterbury rolled to victory in the one doubles spot, taking the match 8-1 for Adrian's only point in doubles play.
Singles action was a little easier for the Bulldogs, as the team took each match in singles action. Waterbury won at the top spot, 6-3, 6-1 and Wilcox took care of business at the two spot, 6-4, 7-5. Sophomore Ronald Ducharme had the most trouble in singles action, going to three sets at the three spot, but ultimately got the win, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. Junior Kyle Haines won in straight sets at the four flight, 6-4, 6-3, and freshman Cameron Rafinski cruised to victory at the five spot, 6-1, 6-3. Rounding out the lineup was sophomore Jovanni Wagner-Payne, who won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
Adrian returns to the courts next Wednesday, April 3 for a non-conference match against St. Francis before hosting Hope in a conference bout on Friday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
