Box Score 1

ALMA, Mich. – The Adrian College softball team split with Alma College on Saturday, April 6 to move to 14-10 on the year. The Bulldogs won the first game, 9-6 and fell 6-4 in 10 innings in game two.

THE BASICS

Game One Scoreline: Adrian 9-9-1 | Alma 6-9-2

Game Two Scoreline: Alma 6-11-2 | Adrian 4-8-2

Location: Alma, Mich. (Scots Park)

Records: AC 14-10 (2-4 MIAA), Alma 12-12 (2-6 MIAA)

GAME ONE

After a scoreless first inning, Adrian broke the game wide open, scoring all nine of its runs in the first game in the inning. The bases were loaded with one out when junior Destiny Rogers was hit by a pitch to score freshman Katie Connolly. Jamie Bell was up next and the sophomore singled to the hole in short to bring around junior Infinity Rogers. Senior catcher Natalia Younan was up next and cleared the bases with a triple to left center to make it 5-0 in favor of AC and causing a pitching change for the Scots.

Younan came around to score when classmate Krista Lynch reached on an error by the second baseman to make it 6-0. A strikeout gave the Bulldogs two outs in the inning but a single and another batter hit by a pitch loaded the bases once again. Sophomore Jalyn DeForest then drew a walk to score Lynch and Connolly and I. Rogers scored their second runs of the inning when sophomore Alaina Macksoud singled down the left field line. Alma made another pitching change in the inning and its third pitcher of the day got the third out to end the Black and Gold's big inning at nine runs.

All Adrian had to do to end the game early was score three more in the top of the third and keep the shutout, or only allow run one through the bottom of the fifth but Alma had other plans. The Scots got three back in the bottom of the fourth, when a two out single with the bases loaded drove in two runs, and another single from the next batter scored the third run of the inning.

Alma scored three more runs in the sixth, again with two outs. A single scored a runner from second and then the bases were loaded again, prompting a pitching change for the Bulldogs. Freshman Natalie Mathers came in to relieve Paige Cubberly and finished the game, but not before giving up a single in the sixth to score two more for Alma, making it a 9-6 ballgame. That would be all the Scots managed in game one, as Mathers sent them down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

GAME TWO

It was Alma opening the scoring in game two when the Scots hit a three-run homer off Mathers to get on the board. Adrian couldn't answer in the bottom half of the inning but got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. The first two runners of the inning made it on base and advanced to second and third when junior Madison Budde used a sac bunt to move them up. Macksoud was up next and drove in Connolly and sent I. Rogers to third. D. Rogers then flied out to right to score her sister but Macksoud was thrown out trying to take second after the run was scored, ending the inning at 3-2.

The Bulldogs tied it up in the next inning when Cubberly singled down the left field line to score junior Ashley Lenington. Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh, sending the game into extra innings. In fact, it took until the 10th inning before another run was scored, when Alma scored three times to take the lead. A single to right scored the runner from second and then a two-run homer with one out make it 6-3.

Adrian tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the 10th, when Connolly flied out to center to score Lynch. Another fly out and a strikeout then dashed AC's hopes of getting its first sweep of the season in conference play.
