ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College men's wrestling team achieved its first 11-win season since 1970 on Thursday with a convincing 37-9 victory over visiting Trine in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center. The Bulldogs move to 11-5 overall and complete the MIAA circuit with a 2-1 mark.
Adrian dominated the match with five of the 10 wins via a pin or technical fall. After freshman Dajun Jones (125 pounds) and Elijah Sanchez (133) staked the home team to an 8-0 lead, freshman Coleton Wiegers made quick work of Justin Davis in 2 minutes and 15 seconds at 141 to increase the advantage to 14-0. (Sanchez defeated his opponent 23-3 for a tech fall as the final horn sounded.)
The Bulldogs took command at 149 and 157 as junior Noah Nieman and sophomore Zach Altman both won their bouts going away by tech fall scores of 21-6 and 18-0, respectively. Adrian extended the lead to 24-0.
Then sophomore Derick Duvall at 165 scored a 19-6 major decision and junior Bryant Moore at 174 won by decision, 8-1, to make it 31-0 Bulldogs.
Trine got on the scoreboard at 184 where Luke Carver edged freshman Kyle Emery by a 3-1 decision in sudden-victory. Chase Gibson chalked up the Thunder's other win at 197 via pin in 4:45.
Sophomore Isaiah Espinoza punctuated the Bulldogs' third win in five all-time meetings against the Thunder at 285 with a 1:17 pin over Zach Saylor, accounting for the final 28-point margin of victory.
The 1969-70 Adrian squad finished 11-4-1 overall and was MIAA champions with a 6-0 conference mark. The season before, the Bulldogs also won 11 duals against six losses.
On Saturday, Adrian will send a junior varsity squad to the Case Western Quadrangular where it will contend with Waynesburg, Case and Washington & Jefferson. The varsity Bulldogs hit the mat again on Friday, Jan. 31, at the Pete Willson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College in Illinois.
