ADRIAN, Mich.--Host Adrian College has two student-athletes who have advanced to Saturday's championship round of the 2020 NCAA Division III Wrestling Central Regional at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center field house. On Friday, junior Devon Pingel and sophomore Isaiah Espinoza both won their quarterfinal matches at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively, to help the Bulldogs earn 59-1/2 points for seventh place in the 15-team field.
Action concludes tomorrow at 10 a.m., with the awards ceremony begins approximately at 4 p.m.
Pingel, who went 3-0 on the day, opened with a fall over Zach Rutledge of Ohio Wesleyan in 51 seconds in a preliminary bout. In the championship flight, round 1, he picked up another pin against Defiance's Mason Morris in 6 minutes and 26 seconds. His last match of the afternoon was a 5-0 decision against Cameron Sauerwein (Mt. St. Joseph) in the 197 quarterfinals, improving to 31-3 on the season.
Espinoza won two matches to reach the 285 semifinals, pinning Grant Robinson from Case Western Reserve in 2:24 and Dominick Wilson (Olivet) in a 3-1 decision. He ties Pingel with a 31-3 mark in 2019-20.
Other Bulldog highlights, juniors Bryant Moore, Noah Nieman, sophomore Elijah Sanchez and freshman Kyle Emery remain alive in the consolation bracket to guarantee a place on the regional podium. At 133, Sanchez lost his opener but then reeled off two straight pins Dominic Pecoraro of Trine in 1:48 and Trent Lashuay from Alma in 1:30. Nieman also is 2-1 at 149, with both of his victories coming via fall. After a tough 3-1 loss to begin his 174 journey, Moore was dominant in his next two wins that included a fall and major decision. Emery is 2-1 at 184 where he sandwiched two wins around a tough 5-2 loss.
