ADRIAN, Mich.--Host Adrian College had six student-athletes place, including consolation champions junior Devon Pingel and sophomore Isaiah Espinoza, at the 2020 NCAA Division III Wrestling Central Regional at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center field house, which ended two days of competition on Saturday. The Bulldogs earned 71.5 points to finish ninth out of 18 schools.

Pingel and Espinoza both placed third at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively, which means they advance to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 13-14. The two national qualifiers represents the most in the modern era of the Adrian program, which has produced five since it was reinstated for the 2015-16 season.

Other Bulldog highlights, juniors Bryant Moore, Noah Nieman, sophomore Elijah Sanchez and freshman Kyle Emery all placed at eighth, seventh, eighth and seventh, respectively. Both Emery and Moore finished the tournament with 3-2 records.

Pingel, who finished 5-1, opened his tournament Friday with a fall over Zach Rutledge of Ohio Wesleyan in 51 seconds in a preliminary bout. In the championship flight, round 1, he picked up another pin against Defiance's Mason Morris in 6 minutes and 26 seconds. His last match of the afternoon was a 5-0 decision against Cameron Sauerwein (Mt. St. Joseph) in the 197 quarterfinals. On Saturday, Pingel lost a tough 5-4 decision to Cash Thompson of Ohio Northern in the semifinals before bouncing back with decisions over Case Western's Brian Kent, 5-3, and Cameron Sauerwein from Mt. St. Joseph, 4-3.

Espinoza won two matches to reach the 285 semifinals, pinning Grant Robinson from Case Western Reserve in 2:24 and Dominick Wilson (Olivet) in a 3-1 decision on Friday. On Saturday, like Pingel he had a good response to losing a tough semifinal bout to Drew Kasper with Otterbein, 3-1 in sudden victory. Espinoza finished strong with wins over Jarod Miller out of Baldwin Wallace by 8-0 major decision and Mount Union's Grant Martin in a 6-4 tiebreaker. Espinoza was 4-1 during the weekend.

Baldwin Wallace defeated Mount Union for the team title, 154 points to 146.
