KALAMAZOO, Mich. - At MacKenzie Field, the Adrian women's soccer team scored twice in a five-minute span and held on the rest of the way to defeat the homestanding Hornets 2-1, and improve to 2-0 in conference play.
"Points on the road are always tough to come by," noted head coach
Ali Alamdari. "Kalamazoo is perennially among the top teams in the conference, so we knew it would take a top effort."
The dynamic duo of
Eve Davis and
McKenna Mahoney provided the offense for the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon with a goal each. The later of the two, Mahoney, also contributed an assist on her teammates' tally.
Kalamazoo broke the ice in the ninth minute on a goal from Kai Ketola, but the home side's lead would only last a mere 16 seconds.
On the ensuing kick-off,
Makenna Mascaro received the ball from just inside the center circle and sent it deep into the Hornets' back line. The long drive took a hard bounce off of a Kalamazoo defender and fell right onto the foot of Mahoney. The senior worked her way in to the right side of the penalty box before passing inward towards a streaking Davis who got just enough on the ball to beat her defender and the Hornets' goalkeeper.
The hosts turned up the pressure after the locals' goal, garnering a corner kick almost immediately. The momentum, however, remained with Adrian.
Just three-and-a-half minutes after the black and gold's first score, another opportunity emerged. After a Kalamazoo foul from inside the penalty arc, Mahoney set up shop. From about 25 yards out, the Bulldogs' leading goal scorer added to her total with a laser shot over the Hornets' wall and past the keeper.
With her tenth goal of the season, Mahoney as now scored in each of Adrian's last six games, and seven of the last eight. As for Davis, whose goal was her second of the season, the junior extends her active point streak to five-consecutive matches.
In total, the Bulldogs mustered 12 shots, including eight on goal. Mahoney was responsible for five of those total shots, while
Kaitlyn Dake,
Kelsey Zoli,
Megan Louwers and
Zoe Blanchard each chipped in a shot on goal.
"We neutralized their top scoring threats well and limited their quality looks," said Alamdari. "We would have liked to create more chances of our own, but we were clinical in the chances we did create and that was ultimately the difference."
Taylor Fischer stopped eight straight from the Hornets after allowing the hosts' lone goal.
Adrian (7-5, 2-0 MIAA) returns back to Docking Stadium for its next contest on October 6 versus Saint Mary's. That match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
