ADRIAN, Mich. - With a pair of home games under its belt, the Adrian NCAA women's hockey team now turns its attention to the first road test of the 2021-22 season.
Fresh off of garnering the number-ten ranking in the USCHO.com's first national poll, the Bulldogs (1-1) travel to St. Paul, Minnesota to challenge Hamline University at Tria Rink.
The Pipers just missed out on making an appearance in Monday's Division III poll, finishing only five points behind Adrian to end up in the "Receiving Votes" section.
This weekend will mark the start of the 2021-22 campaign for Hamline, beginning with a Friday night outing at Wisconsin-Superior before coming home to host the black and gold.
Based out of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), the Pipers enter their new season under the direction of first-year head coach, Whitney Colbert.
The Trinity College (Conn.) alum welcomes back the Pipers' leading scorer from a season ago in Molly Garin, who totaled seven points on five assists and two goals. The senior's 43 shots last year were, by far, the most of any shooter on Hamline's roster. Returner, Emme Nelson was the closest shot taker to Garin with 16, leading her to four goals.
Junior goalkeeper, Ava Bailey is projected to be back between the pipes for the Pipers after earning credit for four Hamline victories last winter.
According to the team archives, Saturday will be the second all-time meeting between Adrian and Hamline. The only other match-up came back on November 1, 2019, in which the locals pounced for three third-period goals en route to a 4-1 victory at the Arrington Ice Arena.
Une Bjelland and
Sydney Daversa combined for three assists in that game, while
Denisa Jandova stopped 40 shots in 60 minutes to record the win in goal for the Bulldogs.
Adrian got off to a shaky start to its latest season, dropping its season-opener to (RV) Oswego State, 2-1, before bouncing back with an emphatic 10-1 rout of Stevenson University.
Bjelland, a junior, got the offense rolling against the Mustangs, tallying her first career hat trick to go along with two assists. The forward's efforts earned her the NCHA's first "Offensive Player of the Week" honors of the 2021-22 season.
Kaleigh Codorette and
Jocelin Hudanish each found the back of the net twice against Stevenson, while
Reaghan Pietrowski,
Jessica VonRuden and Daversa added one goal each for the Bulldogs.
Sophie Goldberg was credited with the win in the paint for the black and gold after allowing only one goal on 11 shots. Adrian also saw 20 solid minutes of goaltending from
Gwen Bowler. The freshman came on in relief of Goldberg and made five additional saves.
Puck drop from St. Paul is slated for 2 p.m. Live stats and video will be available courtesy of Hamline University.
