ADRIAN, Mich. -- The No. 2 Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team (8-1, 5-0 NCHA) opened up the weekend against the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) (2-5-2, 1-3-1 NCHA) with a 9-4 victory on Friday night.
Trevor Coykendall scored his first of three goals early in the first period to give the Bulldogs the lead for good. Coykendall recorded a goal in each of the three periods giving him his first career hat trick.
With a 1-0 lead in the first period,
Sam Ruffin put Adrian up 2-0 on assists from
Ty Enns and
Hunter Wendt. MSOE went on to score later in the period keeping it close and putting the score at 2-1 heading into the first intermission.
Ryan Pitoscia got on Adrian going in the second period with an early goal on an assist from
Connor May. Coykendall then went on to net his second goal of the game of passes from
Zachary Heintz and
Jaden Shields to lead 4-1. May added a goal nine seconds later forcing MSOE to substitute goaltenders.
MSOE found the back of the net to make it a 5-2 game, but Pitoscia answered with an unassisted goal to reclaim the four goal lead.
In the third period, the Bulldogs went on the penalty kill and allowed a power play goal to make it a 6-3 game.
John Kaljian responded later with Adrian's seventh goal of the game which was quickly answer by MSOE. Coykendall then scored his hat trick goal halfway through the third period off an assisted from Pitoscia which gave him his third point of the game.
Zach Goberis added some insurance with a shorthanded goal to take the score to 9-4 resulting in the final.
Coykendall was the first star of the game with his first career hat trick while Pitoscia had a two goals and an assist to be named the second star of the game, and Kaljian was named the third star with a goal and two assists.
Cameron Gray moves to 5-0 on the season in goal with the win. Gray allowed four goals while totaling 25 saves for a percentage of .921.
The Bulldogs will look to sweep the weekend series against MSOE on Saturday, December 3 at 3:00 PM at the Arrington Ice Arena.
