ADA, Ohio -- The Adrian College men's wrestling team competed in the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldogs wrestled 33 guys during the open while Adrian College women's wrestling head coach filled in for head coach
Bill Schindel who was absent due to the recent birth of his child. Adrian finished third out of 16 teams with a total of 142.5 points with the help of championship wins from
Tanner Smith,
Michael Jacobs, and
Dylan Wellbaum.
At 125,
Colton Weimer finished sixth with a 4-2 record. Weimer lost by injury default in the consolation bracket semifinals which resulted in a medical forfeit in the fifth place match.
Tanner Smith came away with the win at 133 with four wins by decisions with scores of 9-3, 10-3, 4-3, and 10-8. At 141,
Zachary Platte finished third contributing 16.5 team points with a win by fall, decision, and major decision before losing his first bout. He went on to win by no contest and won 15-9 in the 3rd place match.
Zach Altman finished third at 165 while
Trenton DiGenova placed eighth in the same bracket. Altman won his first three bouts with a win by tech fall, by fall, and a win by decision. Altman finished the day with a win by fall and a win by decision to add 19 team points to the Bulldogs' total. DiGenova lost his first bout but followed it up with a pair of wins by fall and two wins by decision before losing his next two by medical forfeit.
Derrick Top finished sixth at 174 with 12 team points. Top won by fall and by decision to begin his day, and later win by major decision and decision in the consolation bracket before losing his next two rounds by medical forfeit.
Michael Jacobs went undefeated on the day with a win by forfeit and a win by decision to start the day followed by a 17-0 tech fall, a 2-0 sudden victory in the semifinal, and 14-8 decision win in the championship. Jacobs added 23.5 points to Adrian's total winning the 184 bracket. Also wrestling at 184 was
Blake Williams who went on to finish fourth. Williams finished the day with a 5-2 record losing the third place match by forfeit.
Adrian had its best showing at 197 lead by
Dylan Wellbaum who finished in first. Welbaum recorded 24 team points with two wins by fall and two wins by decision.
Donald Moses finished in second place with his only loss coming to his team Wellbaum in the championship. Moses finished the day with a win by major decision, by fall, a sudden death victory, and a win by decision to add 19 team points. Lastly,
Samuel Shaw finished seventh for Adrian at 197 with the help up a win by decision and major decision during his day.
Adrian's next time on the mats will be on Saturday, December 11 as they host Siena Heights University at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center in a nonconference dual. Wrestling will begin on Saturday at 5:00 PM.
