ADRIAN, Mich. – A goal in the initial fifteen minutes of play proved to be the difference between backyard rivals Adrian and Siena Heights.
In this latest edition of the crosstown-foes rivalry, a tally from Marissa Young in the eleventh minute notched the Saints ahead en route to a 1-0 final in women's soccer action at O'Laughlin Stadium.
"One of the things we talked about pregame was that this was Siena's third match of the regular season while it was our opener," said Adrian women's soccer coach
Ali Alamdari. "We stressed how important it would be to match their intensity and physicality early on. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a little too accurate as we looked out of sorts until the early goal woke us up."
Shots in the game were 10-7 in favor of the home side, including 3-2 in shots on goal.
Sophomore,
Morgan Wands paced the Bulldogs (0-1-0) with three total shots, while fellow sophomore,
Taylor Fischer stopped two shots in 90 minutes between the pipes for Adrian.
Siena Heights' (1-1-1) Young and Emily Broman chipped in a pair of shots each, with Broman receiving credit for the lone assist on Young's goal.
"To our credit, we had a strong performance the rest of the way, in particular in the second half when we created several big chances," noted Alamdari. "We will look to build on the positive moments, and start each match with the right level of intensity from here on out."
Adrian is now set to take on a three-game road trip, starting on September 4 in Glassboro, New Jersey against Rutgers-Camden. The Bulldogs will be back in Adrian to host Mount Union on September 11 at 1 p.m. at Docking Stadium.
