Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Hangs Tough with (RV) Wheaton, Falling 2-1

WHEATON, Ill. - At Joe Bean Stadium, the Adrian women's soccer team gave the nationally-ranked, Wheaton Thunder all they could handle, but ultimately fell short, 2-1.

It is the third consecutive game for the Bulldogs in which the result was determined by just one goal, and sixth overall this season. Adrian is now 3-3 in such instances.

"Any time you have a chance to beat Wheaton, especially on the road, it's a huge opportunity and a result you have to work for," said head coach Ali Alamdari postgame. "We just lacked the tenacity and precision to put them under pressure for sustained periods, so the game opened up and it was played end to end for most of the match."

Wheaton opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Sara Bakke converted on a penalty kick from twelve yards out.

Then, in the 28th minute, the Bulldogs found the equalizer.

Freshman, Kelsey Zoli picked up an arrant pass from the Thunder's backline, creating a two-on-one opportunity with senior, McKenna Mahoney. After gaining some traction inside the penalty area, Zoli slid a pass to her right side where Mahoney would finish the play with a low-grounder into the bottom left side of the net.

The even scoreline did not last long, however, as the home side restored its one-goal cushion three and-a-half minutes into the second half.

In all, (RV) Wheaton produced 33 total shots, including 15 on goal, but black and gold netminder, Taylor Fischer continued to stand her ground throughout the match.

"She came up huge," noted Alamdari. "There were several highlight saves to keep us within striking distance all game long."

The Sophomore finished with 13 saves on the afternoon, including seven in the second half.

On offense, the Bulldogs (3-4) were paced by the scoring duo of Zoli and Mahoney, who each tallied three shots. Kaitlyn Dake contributed two shots for the locals, both on which came on goal.

Adrian's next match is slated for Sunday, September 19 against the University of Michigan-Dearborn at Docking Stadium at 5 p.m.
