Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mahoney's Pair of Goals Pace Women's Soccer Past Michigan-Dearborn

ADRIAN, Mich. - On Sunday afternoon at Docking Stadium, five different Bulldogs contributed points en route to a 4-0 victory for the Adrian women's soccer team over Michigan-Dearborn.

Senior, McKenna Mahoney tallied her team-leading fourth and fifth goals of the season, with junior, Eve Davis assisting on both. Sophomore, Morgan Wands and freshman, Kelsey Zoli also scored for the black and gold, with each garnering assists from senior, Alexandria Dryps.

The games first goal began on the Bulldogs' backline when Sydney Anderson single-handidly dispossessed an attacking Wolverine. The freshman, just managing to keep the ball in play afterwards, found a streaking Dryps up the near sideline. The ensuing pass from Dryps met the foot of Davis who had gained the edge on her defender and was now moving in on goal. Then, with the Michigan-Dearborn goalkeeper closing in, Davis sent the ball to her left to a wide-open Mahoney for the goal.

Adrian maintained a pressuring attack throughout the first half, ultimately leading to its second score of the match. This time, in the 40th minute, Davis, again beat her marker off an incoming throw in, then proceeded to deliver a line drive cross into the box, connecting with the head of Mahoney who placed it brilliantly past Amber Festian of Michigan-Dearborn.

Postgame, head coach Ali Alamdari spoke about the team's solid start after having played on the road a day earlier.

"After the trip to Wheaton on Saturday, we chose to give a few of our players the day off today," explained Alamdari. "It was crucial for us to have a strong start, so we were really pleased with the execution and movement early on."

In the second half, the Wolverines turned on the intensity, pestering the home side with an early push to try an get back into the game.

"(They) did a great job early in the second half to press us," said Alamdari. "Had they made it 2-1, we would have had a long day down the stretch."

Thankfully, the 'Dogs' would find a much-needed insurance goal in the 70th minute.

After an Adrian corner had gone over everyone's heads, the loose ball was recovered at the opposite corner by Zoli, who advanced a pass to Dryps. The Oxford native drove back in towards the goal, only to send a high-arcing cross towards the back post that was finished off by Wands with a header into the ceiling of the net.

The fourth goal for the locals resulted from a mad scramble inside the penalty box after an Adrian free kick. Eventually, after a few touches from both sides, Zoli managed to get just enough on the free ball to get it to the back of the net.

"That third goal made the result certain," noted Alamdari "And we were glad to rest some starters for Wednesday and get some minutes to some of our younger players."

It was a heavy day on the feet of players from both sides, as 30 total shots was taken over the 90 minute contest, including 17 from Adrian.

Sophomore goalkeeper, Taylor Fischer stopped five Wolverine shots, each of which coming in the second half.

Offensively, Mahoney's five total shots paced the Bulldogs, while Zoli chipped in four.

The next match for the black and gold comes on September 22 versus Baldwin Wallace at Docking Stadium at 7 p.m.
