ADRIAN, Mich. - On a rain-soaked Wednesday evening at Docking Stadium, the Adrian women's soccer team netted a pair of goals in the second half en route to a 2-0 shutout of visiting, Baldwin Wallace.
Despite being outshot 12-9 by the Yellow Jackets, the Bulldogs (5-4) found the two that really mattered from
Morgan Wands and
McKenna Mahoney.
"The conditions definitely made it difficult," said Wands postgame. "But we came right off the bat and kept that same level of intensity the entire time."
"Weather was a huge factor in this game," added head coach
Ali Alamdari. "We felt it was particularly important to focus on high percentage scoring chances. We were also pretty confident going into the second half with the wind at our backs."
One of those high percentage opportunites arrived for the locals in the 49th minute.
After a long pass sent into the middle of the field was knocked down by a Baldwin Wallace defender, junior,
Eve Davis collected the loose change and provided a light touch to Wands, who was positioned about 25 yards out from the Yellow Jacket goal. In one motion, the midfielder drove a shot into the upper deck of the next, over the visiting netminder.
It did not take much longer after the game's first goal for the Bulldogs to purchase some insurance.
In the 65th minute, Davis, once again found herself on the helping hand of a goal. A slick through-ball was quickly tracked down by the Adrian forward in the near corner. After a slight hesitation, Davis sent in cross to a wide-open Mahoney in the box, and though the initial try rang of the post, the momentum of the shot off the head of the senior carried it over the line.
The night's second goal was Mahoney's team-leading sixth of the season, and Davis' fourth assist in two matches.
From there, the Adrian defense took over, limiting the opposition's chances on
Taylor Fischer in net.
"Our defense did a phenomenal job of not letting (Baldwin Wallace) in behind," expressed Alamdari. "As a result, much of Taylor's saves were routine and the result was never in doubt after the first goal."
The Bulldogs' sophomore compiled four saves on the evening, marking her second consecutive shutout, and third overall so far in 2021.
Offensively, seven different Bulldogs contributed shots, including two each from Mahoney and
Kelsey Zoli.
Adrian's next contest is the non-conference closer at Wooster on Saturday afternoon.
We took a calculated risk with our lineup and held four likely starters out so that we could get them healthy as we hit the road for a big Wooster matchup and then turn the corner to league play," said Alamdari. "Sometimes those moves backfire, but today we were able to focus and get the job done pretty comfortably. I think that's a testament to the quality of opponents that we've faced throughout this non-conference part of the season."
After Saturday's matchup, the black and gold begin Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play the following Tuesday against Alma at Docking Stadium.
"I think we're ready for conference play, and I think tonight's game really helped us," noted Wands. "I think as long we keep up the same momentum as we had tonight, then we will do fine."
