ADRIAN, Mich. – The No. 1 Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team began the make-up series against Lawrence University on Monday night after the original series was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. Both teams are coming off one day of rest after playing a series against other NCHA opponents on Friday and Saturday. The short rest didn't stop the Bulldogs as they came away with a 7-1 win over the Vikings.
It didn't take the Bulldogs long to get on the board as
Dawson Ellis and
Matt Couto find
Trevor Coykendall for a goal 39 seconds into the game. A little over eight minutes later,
Matus Spodniak found the back of the net to make it 2-0 on a power play and assists from Coykendall and
Ty Enns. Shortly after, Adrian made it a 3-0 game with a goal by newcomer
Dante Spagnuolo off an assist from
Alessio Luciani. With the period winding down,
Ryan Pitoscia added another goal for the Bulldogs to head into the first intermission with a 4-0 lead.
With the four goals in the first period, Lawrence was forced to make a goalie change to begin the second period. It was the right move as the Bulldogs were held scoreless while putting 12 shots on goal in the period. Lawrence had an opportunity on a power play, but Adrian managed to kill it off. At the end of the period, Spagnuolo was called for a penalty allowing Lawrence to begin the third period with 1:47 left on the power play.
The Bulldogs ended up going down another man, but killed off the 5-on-3.
Alessio Luciani started the scoring again bouncing the puck off the goaltender and in to lead 5-0.
Sam Ruffin later netted a goal making it 6-0 followed by a goal from
Ty Enns to go up 7-0. Lawrence finally got on the board late in the third period to break the shutout on a power play goal, but it wasn't enough to come back on the Bulldogs.
Cameron Gray got the start in goal for Adrian recording enough win to remain perfect on the season with 28 saves.
Adrian and Lawrence will return to the ice tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM EST. to wrap up the series.
