OLIVET, Mich. -- The Adrian College men's wrestling team competed in the MIAA Individual Championships on Sunday. The Bulldogs came away with two champions seven top-3 finishes in the conference tournament. Adrian, Trine, Olivet, and Albion appeared in the event without Alma due to COVID-19 protocols.
Teams were allowed ulimated entries at each weight class during the tournament, but Adrian was missing a few wrestlers. At 125, Zach Phifer finished the day with a second place finish after winning the semifinals by fall. In a small bracket at 133,
Tyler Davis ended up with a third place finish in the conference. At 141,Â
Zachary Platte picked up a fourth place finish dropping the third place match by injury default.
Landyn VanWyk recorded a first place finish at 148 with a win by fall, injury default, and a 4-3 decision in the championship round over an Olivet wrestler.
Zach Altman picked up a second placed finish at 165 with a win by decision and a win by fall before losing the championship.
Trenton Rector picked up a fourth place finish at 165 followed by a fourth place finish from
Derrick Top at 174, a third place finish from Mitchelle Moore at 184, and a fourth place finish from
Blake Williams at 184.
The highlights came at 197 where it was an Adrian vs. Adrian battle.
Dylan Wellbaum was named champion after a pair of wins by fall to go along with a win by injury.
Donald Moses placed second with a win by major decision and win by decision to reach the championship.
"We had a really great showing even missing a handful of guys," said head coachÂ
Bill Schindel. " I'm really proud of this team. We continue to fight and grow. This team continues to grow and build something special. It's a lot of fun coaching these young men."
The Adrian College men's wrestling team will return to compete next weekend at the MIAA Duals where the Bulldogs will finish the conference season. Wrestling will take place on Sunday, February 6 at Trine University.
