Bulldog’s Passing Effective in Win Over Alma

ALMA, Mich. -- The Adrian women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 6-2 win at Alma College Tuesday afternoon.

How It Happened

At the 4:28 mark of the first half, Alma would set up for a routine goal kick to get the ball out of their defensive third of the field. The Bulldogs were able to intercept the goal kick in Alma's defensive third. The Bulldogs stayed composed. Capitalizing on the quick possession change, fifth year forward McKenna Mahoney placed a through ball to a teammate near Alma's defensive left corner. The ball was crossed to Kaitlyn Dake, who set up sophomore Kelsey Zoli's second goal of the season.

Near the midpoint mark of the first half, junior Josie Huber had a near goal off a free kick. The Alma goalkeeper would ultimately deflect the ball off the cross bar, but Adrian was able to win the second ball. Senior Eve Davis would find Leah Homan inside the goal box off her assisting header.

After 45 minutes of play, the Bulldogs would lead 3-0. The Bulldogs had not recorded three first half goals since their 3-1 win over Olivet Saturday October 9, 2021.

"Top effort from the ladies today, we started on the front foot and Zoli hit a beautiful finish to get us on the board early. We kept up the pressure and the goal tally allowed us to rotate the squad throughout the match with the points firmly in hand", said head coach Alamdari.

Later in the second half around the 49th minute mark, Kaitlyn Dake chipped the ball into the goal box, finding Eve Davis for her 19th goal of her career. The Bulldogs would go up 4-0.

The Bulldog's would later continue the barrage of scoring.

Responding to Alma's goal in the 66th minute, the Bulldog's tacked on two more goals.
During the 70th minute, Eve Davis would find Mahoney for a right foot chip over the Albion goalkeeper. The goal marked Mahoney's third straight game with a goal.

Josie Huber would conclude the scoring array off an Adrian penalty kick at the 80:40 mark.

Down-To-The-Wire

The six-team MIAA Tournament kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 29 with the top two teams receiving first-round byes. After the completion of the 1-1 draw versus Kalamazoo this past Saturday, the Bulldog's have now qualified for the MIAA Tournament six consecutive years in a row.

The Bulldogs sit at 8-6-4 overall and 4-2-2 in conference play. With today's win at Alma, the Bulldogs have positioned themselves into third place. After starting the season 5-5-2 (.500 win percentage), the Bulldogs completed the season with a 3-1-2 run (.667 win percentage).

"This team set several main targets for the season, with two of them being a winning record and a home game in the tournament. We'll keep an eye on results around the league tonight and hopefully we'll be hosting our quarterfinal on Saturday", said coach Alamdari.

MIAA Seeding Implications

With the Bulldog's win, the team is currently third in the MIAA. Even if Trine loses their evening matchup, the Thunder own the second-place tiebreaker over Adrian with their 1-0 victory on October 4.

Adrian will be able to hold third place if Albion loses or ties their match against Calvin tonight (7 P.M. kickoff). The Bulldogs claimed the tiebreaker over Albion with a 2-0 victory on October 18. With a Calvin win or tie, Adrian will host a quarterfinal of Saturday.

Hope College holds the tiebreaker over the Bulldog's with a 1-0 victory on September 18. The only scenario for Adrian to place above Hope is if the Dutchmen lose to St. Mary's (Ind.) tomorrow at 7 P.M.
