Men's Wrestling Places Fourth at Adrian Invite to Open Season

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's wrestling team began its season on Saturday as they hosted the annual Adrian Invite at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center. The Bulldogs finished fourth out of the 15 teams with 96.5 total points.
 
At 125, the Bulldogs finished with two wrestlers in the top-8. Colton Weimer finished sixth while Zach Phifer placed seventh. Weimer lost by major decision, 17-6, in the fifth place match while Phifer won the seventh place match by decision, 11-5. Ashtyn Bennett and Tyler Davis battled in the fifth place match at 133 for Adrian with Bennett coming away with the win as Davis was forced to medically forfeit.
 
Tanner Smith picked up a fifth place finish at 141 with a 5-2 decision win in the bout while Brody Chase placed first in the Freshman/Sophomore 141 bracket after a 10-6 decision win in the championship. Trenton DiGenova and Zach Altman competed for seventh place at 165 with DiGenova winning by medical forfeit handing Altman the eighth place spot. Jesus Bautista placed eighth in the 165 Freshman/Sophomore bracket.
 
Derrick Duvall battled for the Bulldogs at 174 placing second. Blake Williams came in fourth for Adrian at 184 while Jackson Beck-Calvert finished sixth at 197. 2022 National Qualifier, Dylan Wellbaum, picked up where he left off grabbing a second place finish at 197. Preston Calvert and Shane Swank each placed top-5 in the 197 Freshman/Sophomore bracket.
 
Adrian will be back in action at another home tournament as they host the Adrian Duals on Saturday, November 12 at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM.
