Wellbaum Headed to Nationals after Second Place Finish; Men's Wrestling Places Seven

ADRIAN, Mich. -- One of the most exciting weekends in Division III wrestling took place at Adrian College over the weekend with the Bulldogs serving as host to the DIII Wrestling Central Regional. Top-3 at each weight class advance to the National Tournament while all the others end their seasons. Finishing in the top-8 gets you a trophy for placing as the Bulldogs racked up seven placers. As a team, Adrian finished seventh out of the 20 central region school with a total of 82.5 points.

Zach Phifer got the start at 125 for the Bulldogs where he placed seventh in the bracket. Phifer received a bye to begin the tournament, but when to the consolation bracket with a loss by tech fall. He went on to win by fall to move into the final eight, but was sent to the seventh place match after a loss. Phifer continued to battle finishing seventh with a win by fall.

Landyn VanWyk competed at 149 and finished seventh as well. VanWyk won his first match by fall, but later lost to get sent to the other side of the bracket. From there, he won by decision and later lost to be sent to the seventh place match were he won by fall.

Zach Altman competed at 165 where he went on to finish sixth. Altman won by fall to start the tournament, but dropped his second bout. He then went on to win two in a row with a pair of wins by decision to head to the consolation semifinals. After being tasked with the No. 1 wrestler in the country at 165, Altman was sent to the fifth place bout where he lost by tech fall.

Derick Duvall had a showing for the Bulldogs after being slotted in a prelim match which he won by tech fall. He lost his first bout of the championship bracket to slide over to the consolation rounds. Duvall won three matches in a row with a win by fall and a pair by decision to move to the consolation semifinal. Duvall lost in sudden victory, but bounced back to win the fifth place match by decision.

Blake Williams picked up a sixth place finish at 184 after winning his first match. He later fell to the consolation bracket, but won his next two matches to head to the semis. Williams was sent to the fifth place bout after a loss by tech fall where he ended up as a medical forfeit.

Dylan Wellbaum wrestled at 197 for Adrian as he came in ranked No. 15 in the country. He finished the tournament with a 3-1 record with his only loss coming in the championship to finish second and advance to Nationals. Wellbaum won his first two bouts by decision to head to the semifinal. He went down 4-0 with under a minute to go in the bout. Wellbaum found his opening making a quick move to flip and pin his opponent to change the outcome and get the win. Wellbaum later lost to the No. 4 ranked wrestler in the country in the championship bout.

Donald Moses fell just short of the NCAA National Tournament as he grabbed a fourth place spot. After being a late substitution earlier in the week, Moses was not expected to compete the way he did. Moses won his first match by decision followed by another victory in the quarterfinal. He then went up against the No. 1 wrestler at 285 where he lost 5-1. In the consolation bracket semifinal, Moses won in sudden victory to give him hope for a top-3 spot, but fell short losing by decision of a score of 2-1.

Wellbaum will compete in the National Tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 11-12 at the U.S. Cellular Center.
