CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- One qualifier for the Adrian College men's wrestling team advanced to the National Tournament after the regionals two weeks ago.
Dylan Wellbaum completed his season at the NCAA DIII National Wrestling Championships over the weekend in the 197 bracket.
Wellbaum was faced with a play-in bout against Travis Arata from Roger Williams University. Wellbaum lost by decision by a score of 3-1. Wellbaum was taken down in the first round to trail 2-0. After Arata had the first choice, he picked up an escape to lead Wellbaum 3-0. After no scoring the rest of the second period, Wellbaum picked up a quick escape in the third. Unfortunately he was unable to pick up a take down to tie the bout, and fell 3-1 by decision.
Wellbaum moved on the the wrestle backs as he took on Matthew Kelly of New York University. There wasn't any scoring in the first period and Kelly started the second period on bottom after Wellbaum deferred the choice. Kelly score four points in the second period on a reversal and a 2-point nearfall. Wellbaum bounced back with a reversal of his own to trail 4-2 after two periods. Wellbaum began the third on bottom picking up another reversal to tie the bout 4-4. With just over a minute to go, Kelly responded with a reversal and another 2-point nearfall to come away with an 8-4 victory.
Wellbaum wrapped up his season after day one of the National Championship as he was the first qualifier for Adrian since 2020.
The Adrian College wrestling season has officially come to an end and will resume in the winter of 2022.
