ADRIAN, Mich. - When the Adrian softball team takes the field on Monday afternoon, it will have been ten days since its last contest. After playing 10 games over six days down in Florida during Spring Break, the Bulldogs (3-7) got an extended hiatus with the cancellation of their initial home-opener against Miami University-Hamilton.
Now, despite some recent rain in the area, the black and gold will, at last, begin the home portion of their 2022 schedule versus Heidelberg University.
The Student Princes (6-4), out of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), are 2-2 since winning four out of their first six. Most recently, they dropped a two-game series at home to Alma.
Senior Kat Brady leads Heidelberg with a 0.455 batting average on 15 hits, though she has yet to record a multi-base hit. As a runner, her five total stolen bases ranks tied for fifth in the OAC, and she has scored a team-high 13 times.
Emma Dean's 12 RBIs have contributed most to the Student Princes' offense. The sophomore is one of only two batters in the line-up with at least one double and one triple.
As a team, Heidelberg is still searching for its first fences-clearing connection. Nevertheless, its 0.318 combined batting average is second-best in the conference.
In the circle, Caitlin Dems (2-3) is holding opponents just below 0.300 with 21 strikeouts in 27.1 innings pitched, while Maggie Hoffman (2-0) holds a 1.50 earned-run average over four appearances.
Monday's match-up with Heidelberg will set Adrian up for the rest of the week, in which they travel to three different Ohio-based opponents, including Bluffton University on Tuesday, Defiance College on Saturday, and Ohio Wesleyan University on Sunday.
Bluffton (4-8) is led by the duo of Madison Jones and Lily Tate, who boasts hitting marks of 0.432 and 0.429, respectively, and have a combined 34 hits, six doubles and 18 RBIs.
Jones, a freshman, is also making a name for herself in the circle for the Beavers, tossing 27.0 total innings and retiring a team-high 22 batters on strikes.
Defiance (4-6) actively leads the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) with a 0.342 batting average and eight home runs. Brooke Silco's individual average of 0.528 sits second in the HCAC, while her 0.833 slugging percentage ranks third.
Ohio Wesleyan (1-9), out of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), is looking for its first win since March 8, and has had to deal with numerous cancellations due to poor weather conditions.
Rylee Anspach is the lone Battling Bishop with a plus-0.300 batting average, having mustered a team-best nine hits and four RBIs.
The Bulldogs enter their second week of the regular-season with a team average of 0.257 from the plate, led by
Maggie Leveille (0.357) and
Ava Ferrarelli (0.346). The duo have a combined 19 hits, two doubles and 10 RBIs.
Hailey DeChalk and
Lauren McCulligh sit tied for second on Adrian's roster with six RBIs each, including a pair of home runs from the latter of the two.
On the rubber,
Natalie Mathers (1-5) is limiting opponents to a team-low 0.260 from the box, while
Macee Schang (1-1) is currently even with Mathers with 24 total strikeouts.
Each of this week's contests will include live stats and live video.
