Men's Hockey Takes on St. Norbert in NCHA Harris Cup Finals Once Again

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Once against the Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team and St. Norbert College meet in the Harris Cup Finals. With the exception of the 2020-21 season, the Bulldogs and the Green Knights have faced off in the Harris Cup Finals every year since the 2013-14 season. No. 1 Adrian took the regular season series against St. Norbert with a two game sweep earlier this season at home winning 8-4 and 6-2. 

Adrian remains at No. 1 in the USCHO poll and the Pairwise rankings with a 27-1 record. St. Norbert sits No. 5 in the USCHO poll and No. 5 in the Pairwise with a 23-5 record. With a perfect 18-0 season in NCHA play, the Bulldogs picked up the No. 1 seed for the NCHA playoffs while St. Norbert finished second with 16-2 record with both losses coming to the Bulldogs. 

During the two-game regular season series between Adrian and St. Norbert, Cameron Gray came away with a pair of wins with a total of 47 saves. Gray remains perfect in goal with a 19-0 record on the season marking himself as the only goaltender in the country with a perfect winning percentage.

Also during the two-game regular season series, captain Matt Eller recorded five total assists with three on Friday and two on Saturday. Matus Spodniak during the Friday game came away with three points on one goal with two assists while Alessio Luciani picked up three assists. Dante Spagnuolo led the scoring with a pair of goals. In game two of the series on Saturday, Spodniak had another three-point night where he racked up a pair of goals with an assist.

Luciani continues to lead Adrian on offense with 42 points on 13 goals with 29 assists. Ty Enns sits closely behind with 40 points on 19 goals with 21 assists followed by Sam Ruffin with 38 points on 15 goals with 23 assists.

The NCHA just released the All-Conference awards on Thursday afternoon naming Eller, Luciani, Ruffin, and Gray to the All-League team. Matt Couto was elected to the All-Freshman team, and Adam Krug won the NCHA Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career.

Adrian made its way to the Harris Cup Finals with a sweep over Lake Forest in the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win and a 3-1 win two weekends ago. The Bulldogs battled Trine University in the semifinal round where the Bulldogs picked up a 5-2 victory. The Green Knights made their way to the Finals with a sweep over Marian University by scores of 6-1 and 8-6 followed by an overtime victory in the NCHA semifinals over No. 14 Aurora University.

The winner of the NCHA Harris Cup Finals will receive and automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Tournament. Saturday's game begins at 7:00 PM at the Arrington Ice Arena on Saturday, March 5.
