Softball to Face Three Doubleheaders in Three Days

ADRIAN, Mich. - Mother nature has reared its ugly head again, and for the first time since its trip down to Florida, the Adrian College softball team will take on three doubleheaders in as many days, weather pending.

Out of the trio scheduled, two will be against conference-opponents, including a match-up at home with Olivet College to get the weekend started on Thursday.

The Comets (2-13, 0-6 MIAA) come into their fourth league-series of the season in the midst of an eight-game losing-streak, and have yet to score more than a one run in a game versus MIAA opponents. In fact, through six conference games, Olivet has been outscored 77-3.

Junior Erin Brady is one of three players on the Comets roster to have appeared in all 15 of the team's games so far this season. She leads Olivet with 15 hits, 10 runs scored and four doubles, and has caught four runners stealing from behind the plate.

In the circle, sophomore Katie Lenz is credited with both of the Comets wins on the season. In 11 appearances, she holds an 8.09 earned-run average and has putout 15 batters on strikes.

In 2021, Adrian and Olivet met three times, with the 'Dogs taking each victoriously by an average of 7.7 runs per game.

Then, on Friday, the Bulldogs begin a two-day road-trip to Indiana, beginning with a stop at Anderson University to face off with the Ravens (3-17, 1-7 HCAC).

The team from Anderson recently snapped an 11-game losing-skid on Tuesday afternoon against Manchester University. It was also the Ravens' first win on their home field in 2022.

Taylor Johnson, a senior outfielder paces Anderson with 20 hits on a solid 0.500 batting average. She has, however, not played in four of the last five games for the Ravens. Freshman Molly Buck, on the other hand, has been one of the team's biggest contributors recently, totaling five hits and five RBIs over Anderson's last three games.

The second stop for Adrian on its Indiana-trip will be in Notre Dame to see the Belles of Saint Mary's College (6-7, 2-2 MIAA), who like the 'Dogs, will be seeing their third doubleheader in three days come Saturday.

Freshman Alexis Rauch (0.400 BA) is one of two Belles leading the team with 14 hits, and is the lone hitter in the line-up with at least one double, one triple and one home run.

On the rubber, McKenna Grigoli is 3-0 in five appearances, while Libby Bierbaum (2-3) has worked through a team-high three complete games, retiring 20 on strikes in the process.

In three meetings in 2021, Adrian notched two wins against Saint Mary's, including a 3-1 result in which then-freshman Ava Ferrarelli went 2-for-3.

This season, the sophomore is still swinging, as she actively leads the Bulldogs with 23 hits on a 0.371 batting average. Her seven doubles are tied for the most on the roster with Katie Connolly, who like Saint Mary's Rauch, is the only Bulldog with at least one double, one triple and one home run.

Hailey DeChalk and Lauren McCulligh boast the highest-scoring bats for Adrian through 22 games this season. The duo has combined for 39 hits, including eight doubles and five home runs for 30 total RBIs.

In the circle, Natalie Mathers has gone five-plus innings in each of her last three appearances, and is coming off of a season-high seven strikeout performance in a win at Bluffton University on Sunday.

Live stats and video will be available for all three of this weekend's doubleheaders.
