ADRIAN, Mich. - Just like that, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association softball postseason is just two weeks away, and this upcoming weekend is will be a significant one for the Bulldog softball team.
Currently holding the conference's fifth-spot, Adrian will welcome Alma College and Trine University on Friday and Saturday for the black and gold's final slate of home games this season. As of Thursday, the Scots and the Thunder rank third and fourth, respectively in the league standings, making up the final two available slots for the playoffs.
The 'Dogs first opponent of the weekend, Alma, has won eight of its ten conference match-ups in 2022, including its last four in sweeps of Kalamazoo College and Saint Mary's College.
The Scots (21-9, 8-2 MIAA) boast a heavy arsenal of offensive weapons, led by Haley Ullrich (0.529) and Emma Fraser (0.500) who ranked tied for first in the MIAA with 45 hits each, and first and second, respectively with the only batting averages in the conferences at 0.500 or greater. Furthermore, Ullrich, a senior, also paces the league with a 0.655 on-base percentage, as in addition to her hits, she has been walked a conference-high 33 times.
Incredibly, the impressive numbers don't stop at the plate for the Scots' top hitter. In 17 appearances so far this season, Ullrich sports a 12-5 record in the circle, the most wins of any pitcher in the MIAA. She has also worked through more innings (99.2), more complete games (15), and has retired more batters (124) than any other circle dweller in the conference.
As for Trine, the Thunder (16-11, 6-2 MIAA) have won 16 of their last 20 contests after starting the season 0-7.
Junior Ellie Trine, leads the team with 32 total hits and a 0.376 batting average, including nine doubles and 12 RBIs. The outfielder is flanked by shortstop Amanda Prather, who with just 21 hits has batted in a team-high 26 runs. She has also connected on seven doubles and three home runs.
In the circle, Adrienne Rosey (7-7) actively ranks second in the MIAA with a 1.30 earned-run average. She also holds the second-best strikeouts per seven innings mark at 9.09, which is narrowly ahead of Adrian's
Macee Schang (8.88), who has allowed zero earned runs on the rubber for the Bulldogs in eight of her last 12 outings.
Offensively for the locals,
Hailey DeChalk (0.381) stands atop of leaderboard with 32 hits and 19 RBIs, and is coming off a six-game weekend in which she batted a team-best 0.611 (11-for-18).
Katie Connolly (0.333) has been on fire as of late, dropping eight doubles in her last eight games to bring her team-leading total up to 13. She also remains the lone Bulldog to have recorded at least one double, one triple and one home run this season.
Since 2015, Adrian is a combined 5-17 against Alma and Trine, with all five wins coming in 2018 or later.
